Client: Blount County Board of Education
Area: 39,000 sq. ft.
Scope: Original building-media center, ten classrooms, teachers'
lounge and workroom, administration suite, cafetorium, and kitchen.
Additions-ten classrooms, two special education classrooms,
and gymnasium.
Southeastern Elementary was designed for an initial enrollment
of 260 students with plans for expansion to handle 520. The
owner's design requirements were for economy and low maintenance,
achieved in part with terrazzo floors thoughout, except classrooms,
which are carpeted.
The original plan has classrooms grouped around the media center
and teachers' workroom. Natural light is introduced to the classrooms
through sloped translucent panels between the exterior wall
and the fascia. The main entrance lobby serves the administration
area and the cafetorium.
The addition was accomplished by adding similar classroom groupings
in accordance with the master plan. The gymnasium was added
to allow indoor physical activities and sports.
